Information about this Data
Newborn screening data for Region 4 is provided to assist families and physicians in knowing the relative number of confirmed annual cases for each screened metabolic disorder within their respective state and how it compares to other states in the region. Since 1962 when the Guthrie Test was first implemented to detect hyperphenylalanine, more sophisticated technology like mass tandem spectroscopy has allowed each state to progressively increase the number of disorders they screen in their program.
The data represents the vast majority of metabolic disorders that can be screened using current technology. As you review the data, you will notice a wide state-to-state variation in the number of disorders screened, which may be attributable to community values, political environment, technological capabilities, and/or economic environments.
The Region 4 Newborn Screening Data, summarized annually, provides detailed data on newborn screening results within Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
